The above track was created by Lance and Mike one afternoon in Alicante; an improvised jam using mainly percussion instruments.
In readiness for the upcoming BAST (British Academy of Sound Therapy) course on Group Voice Therapy, Lance had a number of percussion items that would be used as part of voice therapy, such as dumbbell chimes, shaker eggs, and an earth chime. With the other instruments that Lance had in his flat (xylophone, Karimba, thunder drum, Himalayan singing bowl), they recorded a completely improvised session for about 10 minutes, using whichever instruments felt right at the moment. The aim of the session was to be spontaneous, to go where feeling led rather than any kind of musical or rhythmic notion.
Using the raw recorded material Lance then reworked it, tightening up the sounds, overdubbing and adding filters when needed to create atmosphere. The resulting track had notions of water lapping onto shores and hence the name “The Water Concerto” was born from that. It seemed appropriate, given the Earthwaves focus both on the ideas of water and enquiry into musical instruments of different types.
