Bowl

Handbuilt stoneware bowl 12cm dia x 6.5cm ht

Bowl – other side

This bowl was just a simple piece. Made using coiled stoneware clay. We wanted to explore simple techniques that could be used by Neolithic people easily and to make pieces that were obviously hand built, not moulded or thrown. This is a small and strong pot. It is not unlike the thickness of Neolithic pots although these with be earthen ware. It was decorated to suggest the kind of woodfired colours that can be achieved with clay with variable levels of oxides that have not been overly mixed, but as this is a commercial clay fired in an electric kiln an effect needed to be applied. Neolithic pots are more complex in excised grooved decoration and can be more elaborate with shaped rims.
