The Birth of Earthwaves

It all began in Kings Cross station…

Over a cup of coffee and a rich treat from Patisserie Valerie, we started discussing how sound could be transmitted through porcelain. This was based on how when certain sea shells are picked up, you can hear “the sea” when place to your ear. From this ideas spiralled outward and began to catch our imagination.

These notions appealed to both of us as they encapsulated our areas of artistic enquiry – Mike with clay and porcelain, Lance with sound. From there the seed of Earthwaves was born (though it was later that the name would come to us), and our first joint artistic venture – The Conch Cry – was born.

As for the name Earthwaves? It was decided that Mike working with the ‘earth’ (clay, ceramics) and Lance with sound and video (light and audio transmitted through waves), the combination of both terms seemed logical and appropriate.
